Bio
Geoff grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts and moved to Lexington-Fayette County in 1982, where he has lived ever since.
He became a member of the antiwar movement after taking two courses at MIT on US foreign policy with Noam Chomsky. After graduating from MIT in 1977 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Geoff later got a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at UMass (Amherst) and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics at UK.
Geoff spent 15 years working in Frankfort, where he promoted energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies for Kentucky’s state energy office, an agency now called the Department for Energy Development and Independence (DEDI). He was the Assistant Director for most of that time and participated in more than a dozen utility company cases before the Public Service Commission (PSC).
After leaving state government, he led the Sierra Club team that intervened in PSC Rate Case No. 2006-00472, “General Adjustment of Electric Rates of East Kentucky Power Cooperative, Inc.” The team’s goal was to help the utility improve energy efficiency in its large service territory, which would lower electricity bills.
From 1982 to 2014, Geoff served in a wide range of responsible volunteer positions at Good Foods Co-op in Lexington, including treasurer, board member, board president, bylaws committee chair, planning committee member, and finance committee chair.
